I vaguely recall a documentary about a French Archaeologist making contact with New Guinea natives who thought he was a ghost. Pretty funny if you think about it!
I spent a few months living a fairly remote village in the Republic of Georigia. Georgians are certainly aware of the existence of black people but blacks are pretty rare within the country.
I knew two black women who were also in Georgia when I was and we'd sometimes travel together. They always caused a reaction. People would want to take pictures with then and touch their skin and hair. (They'd also want to take pictures with me (a white dude) because I was obviously not Georgian)
One of the women was always very offended by this. The other was much more understanding.

Yeah, people don't tend to associate many of the former Soviet republics with remoteness, but many are shockingly remote. Georgia is a part of the world that has to qualify as such. I mean, how many people do you know from Georgia? Not many I'm sure.
It's like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, or Kyrgyzstan...no one even knows where they are on a map. I'd bet that most people in those old Soviet republics have never seen a black person EVER!
White man entering a foreign land with Christianity on his mind. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
