Seems like I must have read Marxist/Communist or Fascist, Hitler type statements hundreds of times here.

How is it that if a country which cuts taxes 20 times over a few decades cutting tax rates by 25%, turns into socialist reich when the taxes go up by 2%? For most of the last century we have had tax hikes, tax cuts, expansions of the safety net, cuts and contractions, etc. That is what all countries do. Yet, judging from the discussions here, if the other side gets in power for 4 years it will veer us into a fascist state or a communist armageddon.

Almost every conceivable economic or political variable has some sort of "golden mean," meaning, in effect that the best conditions occur at some intermediate level of taxation, military expenditures, social spending, etc. So, why do we always paint the other person's views in the most extreme and dishonest ways? I would guess that most people cluster around the center as centrist, center-left or center-right, yet you would not know that from the rhetoric. It just seems stupid to me, but it is about 98% of the discussion and slurs here.

For instance, I'd like to see taxe rate go up to 20% of GDP, close to and slightly higher than where they have been for decades, to pay for wars and to prepare for the boomer retirements. I don't want them to go to 25 or 30%, yet I would be painted as a crazy liberal for even proposing 20%. Why can't we have more nuanced and quantitative than ideological, absolutist discussions?

Because this is an anonymous forum. The debates would be different if we had to log in with a Facebook or Google account.

Probably true. Still, it seems like the center is missing in most of our discussions. Maybe they are just too sensible to hang out here.

Curious - Are you saying you would like to see the bottom 50% of wage earners pay some income tax?

You bet. The whole Bush tax cuts thing has been weird. So, the guy cuts taxes twice, right after launching two wars, then all the right wingers turn around and point out that half the people are paying nothing. Crazy that a Republican does the cutting, and the poor are now the leeches. But anyway. Damn straight! We should all have some damn skin in the game! Otherwise, people will (rightly) call you a leech.

See, we agreed on something, even though I am left, and (I presume) you are right of center.
