They can always blame it on the Community Organizers who insist that the children belong to the community. It's fairly obvious the Community Organizers seek control for their own benefit, not that of any kid.
In effect, it's the Community Organizers who are stealing that dream, beginning with Lyndon Johnson, Democrat extraordinaire. Actually, with T.Roosevelt and Wilson, but I'm a post WWII kind of guy.

When everyone is poor and the world is young, all can rise from poverty to broad-based wealth. But eventually, the most aggressive and selfish will cast their eyes on the wealth of their fellow workers and see it as rightfully their own. Just like David lusted for Uriah's wife Bethsheba. We confused a healthy drive for success with the lust for disproportionate power and wealth. Instead of praising restraint and proportion, we worshipped obscene wealth and hegemony. That is exactly what many of our parents left Europe to escape.
The desire for freedom and success are great to a point. It gets us out of bed and inspires creativity, but worshiping selfishness ideologically is like leaving a young python in the nursery. Eventually it will grow in size and hunger, until it consumes the things that really matter. That is precisely what has happened in the USA.
The financial class grew until it ate the middle class, and we cheered it on.
The American Dream is alive and well, the problem is that many Americans have come to believe that the dream will come true for them simply by... well dreaming about it.
Like I tell my students all the time, you don't improve yourself by watching other people work... you improve yourself by working for yourself.
My American dream was to find a good woman that would become my wife, have a family with her, buy a house that we could grow old together in, and to send my children to college on my dime so they could start out life debt free.
While not glamorous compared to other people this dream made me happy and I have been able to spend my life fulfilling that dream. I don't drive the latest cars because a car payment would take away from my kids education, I don't take cruises every year because that would hurt my ability to pay off my house. I live in my means and I take joy in doing so. This is what the American dream should be, living the best you could while giving your kids a shot of having as good or better than you did.
American Dream seems pretty healthy too me: most of my colleagues, acquaintances and I enjoy decent jobs, places to live, enough things to do, and are generally happy. Not really sure what else I want right now...maybe better weather?
How many of your friends are able to buy a home? How many are on track to enjoy a secure retirement?

It's up to we the people to reverse income inequality and restore the cooperative relationship between government, corporations and labor unions.
"Income inequality" is a canard that the liberal establishment has created in order to further their redistributionist, anti-capitalist agenda, called "progressivism."
Real income inequality is a naturally occurring phenomenon that results when some people strive harder than others to improve their standard of living, making a better life for themselves and their families, and achieve their personal goals, and whatever they define for themselves as "financial security," and independence.
Some people are achievers. Others are not. Achievers are driven. They set goals and they strive to meet them. Some, because of natural ability and higher educational achievement, excell, and therefore advance in their careers to ever higher positions, and earnings. This is not greed. It is the reward for hard work and dedication to ones job.
The capitalist system champions individualism and personal achievement. It rewards those who work. It is moral and it is just. By it's very nature, it benefits others through the economic growth of the whole community, and through the products and services it creates.
The profit motive, the hallmark of capitalism, is moral and right. In and of itself, it is not greed. It is the impetus behind the development of a product or service. It is for profit that products and services are developed, and the success of such product or service is dependent on how it benefits the lives of others. If there is no public good, there will be no profit. If there is no profit, the venture fails.
As used by Progressives, the term "income inequality" is specious. It is fraudulently based on a false premise.
The American Dream is being in control of your own destiny; determining your own future, pursuing happiness, unimpeaded by excessive government regulation and restrictions on freedom.
Who stole the American Dream? Progressives, and government under the control of Progressives and the ideology that progressivism (Marxist/socialist) represents.
