LOS ANGELES (CBSDC/AP) — Stephen Hawking, who spent his career decoding the universe and even experienced weightlessness, is urging the continuation of space exploration — for humanity’s sake.
The 71-year-old Hawking said he did not think humans would survive another 1,000 years “without escaping beyond our fragile planet.”

Interesting. And why does Hawking think we're doomed if we don't expand into the solar system and nearby space?

Quote:
"It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million," Hawking said. "Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain inward-looking on planet Earth, but to spread out into space."

Humans stuck on Earth are at risk from two kinds of catastrophes, Hawking said. First, the kind we bring on ourselves, such as possible devastating impacts from climate change, or nuclear or biological warfare.

We won't. Earth is a single planet in a cosmos. The dinosaurs were a relatively clean living species and a an asteroid ended it.

KA-BAAAAAAAAAM! You got it.

Who is stupid enough to believe that we were gonna survive forever as a species to begin with? Even if we made it another few billion years, the sun will eventually do what all stars do...blow up and kill us all.

We're NOTHING. Sollopcistic ass humans just don't get it. We're special only in that our planet sits where it does, hence giving us life. This planet wasn't made for us...we're just another species as far as the cosmos is concerned; not that it's "concerned" about us at all (sorry for the pathetic fallacy).

Just thank your lucky stars that you were ever here despite the tremendous odds against it.

I understand that, but I'm just not sure what the point was.

The sun will become too hot in about 100 million years. Well before it becomes a red giant.
