OP, Washington is in a fiscal mess. A few billion. A lot of it goes unnoticed due to all the federal money being pumped in keeping the state afloat. Also, due to the overall national economy the Canadian dollar is strong and we get lots of Canadian spending near the border. But the states policies are typically business unfriendly and if some of the campaign rhetoric from our now governor comes to fruition, I'd imagine it to get worse and cause more private hardship.

Again, that is not answering my question. If California and detriot are being held up as examples of why liberal poicies don't work, tell me what conservative states or cities that prove conservative policies are what is needed.

Let’s start with Education

I live in Texas. I hear all the time from liberals that our education system is terrible. So I did some checking. Here is the latest information on Education from the Nations Report Card.
This tracks all 50 states and DC for a number of categories in 4th and 8th grade. I looked at 8th grade math but the other areas are about the same.

Texas ranks only 1 point ahead of Wisconsin and 9 points behind Massachusetts. Those are a couple of nice liberal states that people like to talk about but when you dig a bit deeper the numbers show that Conservative Texas is doing a far better job than either of those states in serving their people.
While Texas score is 290 overall, when broken down by race, Texas Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics fare better than those same groups in Wisconsin and Massachusetts.

South Carolina is a severly conservative state.
Every one knows that.
Red as Red can be.
Mark Sanford is running for Senator, and he will probably win.
Good Ole Boys down Here!
The state is not doing very well at all. Sucks the Federal Government
dry every year taking most of its income from the Feds, yet, doesn't
want government. LOL!
The taxes are not good down here, or fair, but you really just have to
live down here to totally understand.
There are rich down here, and poor. That is it.
And if you all are not careful, the whole country is going to be just this.
South Carolina ranks second in the whole country for drunk driving accidents and
deaths, and there is a reason for that, and believe me, it's not all the tourists, it's
the locals.
In my country alone, 2,300 children under the age of 13 would have been able to
get Medicare for health insurance under the new law for Obama Cares.
South Carolina voted it down.
Which means, in my county, 2,300 children DON"T HAVE INSURANCE.
So, when those little children go to school along with all the other children in the
county, they are not vaccinated against diseases that other children have been vaccinated
for, or they can also spread diseases to everyone at school.
This is the most uncaring state I have ever lived in.

Actually NM and Mich are in the bottom 10 in state GDP per Capita.

Also, Cost of Living coincides with GDP. As 9 of the top 10 most expensive states to live in are Blue states.
