I think the GOP has abandoned it's public purpose. It has turned into a bunch of lobbyists posing as civil servants. The Dems do this too, but the new GOP is so far to the right, and so nasty, they really do make W seem like he was a compassionate conservative.

Reagan, who was darn conservative personally, still showed the ability to compromise and cut a deal for the people. He even raised taxes when necessary. Same with Dole, Bush I, and even Gingrich. This bunch is in a league of their own. More like terrorists than leaders.

Elect some guys like Huntsman and Christie, and I think you would find some bipartisan support.

My only issue with that is I remember years ago when the dems controlled both houses and the presidency and it was not pleasant at all. Because it got so bad, that is why after several years the republicans dominated only to screw it up big time. We need a third---not a forth or fifth---party.

I hated it, especially when Bushie went all neo-proggy after 9/11.

Haven't had a conservative since Coolidge.

Did you fear serfdom then?

The fact is, most would like their party to be in charge, whether it be Dem or GOP.

Why would anyone be so myopic?

Also, seems that the poll does not agree with your hypothesis.

It seems to work reasonably well in every other democracy. You probably know better than I about such things, but I can't think of any country that has adopted our legislative model. If any emerging democracies were thinking about it, events of the past couple decades would surely convince them it is a system where partisanship, pettiness, and the corruption of money leads to stalement and an inability to deal with even monumental problems. In a way our Congress resembles the EU finance system.

Good point carterstamp.

Hey, the truth is, we don't want one party rule forever, but we do want to marginalize the present GOP until their voters choose to send in some competent people. This current bunch is a little shop of horrors, truly.
