I certainly get that vibe. Many people around here seem to have a militia/survivalist mindset, love to spread conspiracy theories and think that compromise has no place in the democratic process - or at least, any compromise that might be asked of THEM. The other side can compromise EVERYTHING, and that's how it should be. Worst of all we have a POTUS who is a black man, and he actually had the audacity to win a second term. Talk about an uppity n-word! More than a few members of this forum are openly racist and this situation always is festering in their so-called brains.
Look at all the threads that appeared calling for secession in the wake of the November elections. There is a strong "coon hound" contingent here who get their world view from the Rush Limbaugh show and wouldn't recognize an impartial source of information if it was presented to them by the ghost of Robert E. Lee himself. These people feel ever more embattled as they watch the nation become more multi-racial and see systems of belief that run counter to their owr increasingly accepted by the rest of the country.
If all this weren't bad enough, the rise of the home schooling phenomenon has resulted in the blind leading the blind. Science is the work of the devil, math can be discarded for a $2 buck calculator, and literacy is irrelevant in the current age of electronics. Ayn Rand may be the goddess of libertarians and tea party types, but try to find a right winger who can even name her books, much less has read them. And speaking of literacy, our great Southern writers such as Thomas Wolf, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, etc. are read everywhere else in the Country except in the South, where intelligence and education is regarded with suspicion.
All of the above results in an enclave of fanatics, fearful of change, racist in outlook, and just itching to squeeze the trigger on a government that they feel is overly represented by the Blue States. Needless to say, if the Evil Government decided to clamp down on the American people, a few drones and a contingent or two of Navy Seals would do the job, but don't try to tell Bubba that.

The incredible nationwide ammunition shortage that has been going on for the last year is a terrifying wakeup call for all of us. Every citizen should be worried when government agencies stock up for internal war, but most of all at a time when a President that uses every dirty trick in the book to push a Big Government/Big Business agenda is in power--and 100% protected by a complicit media.
If you doubt there is one, or think the problem is due to private citizens stocking up, simply take a trip to your local sporting supply retailer--like Cabelas or Kittery Trading Post or even WalMart. Call for the manager, or just ask the employees why they have no ammo for vast majority of currently owned-firearms. I did this 2 weeks ago at Cabelas (a huge retailer in Maine), and the man told me: "The manufacturers are required to fill federal orders first, and since last fall, there has been almost nothing left over. And the suppliers advise that nothing is going to change in the foreseeable future." Calls and emails to family members around the country confirm that the shortage is nationwide.
Even Congress appears to have been largely left out of the information loop, as federal Departments (like Homeland Security) purchased and placed orders on so much ammunition that even local Police Departments are scrambling. In effect, the federal government has been buying up the entire supply of ammunition produced by manufacturers, for over a year now. And orders still in process lock up the supply far into the future.
So why is the federal government buying massive amounts of ammo? Homeland Security officials told Congress they get better prices by buying in bulk--but (1) bulk rates do NOT require buying the entire manufacturer's output; (2) cost skyrockets when there is a shortage, and (3) why does an internal federal agency need to train, raise and supply a virtual army, when we already have a gigantic and oversized military?
Why would a federal department that didn't even exist prior to the 9/11 bombings, and which was totally absent during the aftermath of the recent Boston terrorist bombings except to hold hearings after the fact, need to stock up on vast amounts of ammunition? That is the question that should be terrifying every citizen that DOESN'T want violent political unrest.
So to answer the question, no sane citizen wants it to happen--even if some of the more outspoken and radical people say they do--because anyone involved in a violent conflict is going to lose their home, wealth, possessions, and possibly their lives. But we now have proof positive that the federal government not only thinks it will happen, but is preparing to violently suppress it (rather than use peaceful and legal means). And that leads us to the next question: what, exactly, is Obama thinking of doing that would cause a grass-roots movement of citizens to pick up arms to fight?
So much ferocity in some posters give me the feeling they are just itching to have shoot out with the Feds. Does anyone else around here get those vibes?

Nobody wants to start a war with the government, except the anarchists. The vast majority of gun owners would rather have the government do it's job, which seems beyond their ability at the moment. However, they keep adding new laws to the books as if they've got nothing better to do.
The better question is "Why does the government want to start a war with the citizens?"
The Left in this country is HOPING there will be some sort of shoot out. They will just hide under their beds and comply with the jackboots thinking that they will win that way, thinking they will finally have a one-sided society that ALL think alike. The joke is on them, they will be next in line to be tied up as a slave and they actually CHEER it like the Soviet and German citizens in the 30's and 40's did.
There is a sect called Survivalists who are just as you describe. In fact, they have actually started shootouts with law enforcement because they want it so badly. Google "Louis Theroux Survivalists" and watch the documentary. It is quite interesting and I feel that many people are only a few degrees away from these people. What is more interesting... follow up on some of these people post-documentary.

I'm sorry, but what has made you so comfortable with the powers that be that has made you feel they would never turn on you?
Nobody is saying that you have to go out and overthrow the government...but what is wrong about being prepared. Do you malign individuals for taking boxing lessons? Or training in MMA?

There is a difference between training for self-defense and actively looking to start a fight like some people do when they learn boxing and MMA. I'm sorry, but people who hoard themselves in the middle of nowhere thinking that the government is coming "any day now" are a bit off their rockers. It isn't a surprise that the same people featured in the documentary have given it up and are now living average lives.

Survivalists aren't anti government, and they aren't preparing to start a war. They just plan to SURVIVE it when it happens. You are confusing survivalists with militants.
Theroux is a spin doctor who can make any belief seem ridiculous, rendering his works just as. He weeds out only the most insane fringe and calls it the norm for the bunch, all to sell his brand of snake oil. HE IS A CAPITALIST! I place him right next to Michael Moore on the loon scale.

An insane premise can be displayed in any direction one chooses to target, and there will be others who believe the nonsense as well.
I'd suggest that a minority of people may be a few degrees away from any fringe wacko belief system, liberal or conservative. Look at the violence in Seattle being started by anarchists. I could just as easily make a connection between them and all liberals. It's quite a stretch to bundle every gun owner/survivalist together and imply that most of them are a few degrees from wanting a war with government.
In reality, it's the 5% rule that applies. 5% of all people, no matter what their beliefs, will seek to destroy, control, or sponge off of, the other 95%.
