"Moving or using large quantities of chemical weapons would cross a “red line” and “change my calculus,” the president declared in response to a question at a news conference, to the surprise of some of the advisers who had attended the weekend meetings and wondered where the “red line” came from. With such an evocative phrase, the president had defined his policy in a way some advisers wish they could take back."

“The idea was to put a chill into the Assad regime without actually trapping the president into any predetermined action,” said one senior official, who, like others, discussed the internal debate on the condition of anonymity. But “what the president said in August was unscripted,” another official said. Mr. Obama was thinking of a chemical attack that would cause mass fatalities, not relatively small-scale episodes like those now being investigated, except the “nuance got completely dropped.”

Just like the sequester..he thought it would never happen.

Now that it did..the tap dancing starts. I'm just waiting to see how this can turn into the Republican's fault.

Using Russia and Iran as intermediaries. Putting "chills" into someone like Assad without declaring any predetermined action or consequences.

That article clearly describes the empty suit, empty headed, empty promise, empty threat fool that we now have has president. We know it. And the rest of the world knows it.

Of course he is "walking it back".

If he actually did what he said he would be held responsible for making a decision which even he could not blame on someone else.

Can't have that!

Then why did dear leader threaten to involve the US? He thinks that he can solve the entire worlds problems by just making a statement?

So much for his being a great leader.

Never make a threat you are not willing to carry out; it makes you look like a coward.

Even the NY Times stated that he made an "off the cuff remark" when drawing a red line about Syria.

The non leader figured that the media would forget this like they have ever other "off the cuff" remark he's made.

When King Stephen besieged a castle, he used as a 12 year old hostage to ensure that his father surrendered the castle. When Stephen ordered the father to surrender or the boy would be hanged, the father replied that he should go ahead saying, "I still have the hammer and the anvil with which to forge still more and better sons!"

Stephen could not bring himself to hang the boy and one of his advisers remarked "He should not have done that." To which another replied "you would have have him hang a child?" And the first answered "He should never have said he would do it."

Ok..so it was just an off hand comment, not an actual statement to Syria.
Got it..he "didn't mean what he said".

Well since the MSM has clarified that for us, we'll just move on.
