As I recall LBJ was a conservative, a Texan, and a man who stepped down rather than run again. Perhaps his fellow Texas might have taken a lesson from him.

LBJ a conservative? Surely you recall The Great Society, don't you? A pricey update of the New Deal, as I recall...
Bush is the creation of a group of powerful business leaders who promoted and bankrolled him to be President so he could promote their agenda and create conditions in which government money would flow into their businesses. High government spending is just part of the arrangement.

Pork, while often outrageous, takes but a tiny percentage of our national budget. It's not the reason spending increased so significantly during Bush's reign. However, it did go up signicantly during his reign as well, something he made no attempt to reduce until Democrats controlled Congress.
