On my last trip from Asia to Europe I had the misfortune of having to sit next to an outrageously obese woman, taking up my space with her flabby arms.
Now, surely these people should have to pay more for the air ticket due to extra weight and space concerns.
I have had the same experience - the woman was embarrassed and apologetic beyond belief. I reassured her that we'd both make it through the experience and apologized for resting my left arm on one of her rolls. We both laughed and spent nine hours in friendly conversation.
Alas, no, obese people should NOT have to pay twice the fare. Instead, they - like everybody else - should step on a scale with their luggage and pay by total weight.
You should have called the steward and asked her to make the fat slob remove her fat from YOUR space or find you another seat that you can actually use. Yes the more you weigh the more you should pay.
I'm not a petite fellow, but it seems fair - the bigger you are the more fuel you'll consume, so it only makes sense to pay by the pound... Although, most likely airlines would set current fares at 100 pounds, and go from there.

The ticket should be for a "base" weight and EVERYONE pays for their additional pounds above the base.

If we're under the base do we get a discount?
