We shouldn't be screwing around in that hornets nest of a region in the first place!!!!
Al-Qaeda does exist but not as a western style hierarchical organization we would recognize. AQ, like the religion they believe is not as concerned with who is in charge as much as how to achieve their goal of worldwide Islamic monopoly. This lack of concentrated command is one of the things that make it so difficult to defeat. We know how to defeat hierarchical organizations by chopping off the leadership but AQ is different as it does not have a defined leadership. I am not certain it can be defeated so long as the Muslim majority retrains poor, isolated and ignorant.
I do think the damages caused by AQ can be minimized by excellent spy craft, machine and human, active suppression of active threats by drone attacks and, most importantly, wide spread economic development in the Islamic world. Economic development both reduces frustration and increases secularization of societies. Without the economic frustration or the fanatic religious belief the size of the recruitment pools for AQ fanatics will decrease.
So long as the world is dominated by mystical religions that are mutually exclusive there will always be a place for Al Qaeda and equally fanatic Christians, Jews and other religions that a few are more than willing to use violence to expand their religion to the great detriment of the peaceful people of the world that don't care what you believe so long as you do not impose your fantasy on them.
From what I've been reading, it is a shell of its former self. Now its just a bunch of independent groups calling themselves Al Qaeda, and not the organization it once was.

we did more than our part facilitating the culture in the middle east. Through espionage, enforcing UN resolution through sanctions and plenty of other antagonization.
It is real. I personally know several muslim families from different countries that left their homeland because of threats against them by Al Qaeda and affliated groups. As well as not wanting their young boys to be exposed to radicalization. Yes they keep a very low profile even here in the US.
