No, they are not trying to eliminate private insurance. It is alive and well. People that have a very big income don't want to pay the 6 1/2 percent, so that is why you can opt out above a certain income level. I never felt like a "second class citizen" and lived with that system for 29 years. I guess the 2nd class citizen feeling could come from the fact that you don't get the private room etc. But I would gladly trade that for the peace of mind I had there and a lot less hassles.

Well, as I said, you must have very good health insurance then. we have BCBS of MO (even though we live in MA), which is what the employer provides and we do have to submit claims. It is without a doubt the worst insurance I have ever had. I heard our insurance is going to change to Anthem BCBS next year, maybe it will be better....

At one time i had BCBS of MD (when we lived in MD), they were better! But that was insurance that I privately bought, not through my husbands employer.

oh and BCBS provides all kinds of insurance, traditional, ppo, hmo etc. I think that makes a difference. But since we have no choice in the matter...we have to take what is offered.

I have had BC in both situations - and never a claim form did I ever have to file -

Mine's not portable, but I don't have to deal with insurance companies or fill out paperwork either. All I have to do is give my card to the doctor and their staff deal with it.

I have BCBS TX PPO...no problems so far. I had BCBS TX way back in the late 1990s too when I lived in Austin...never had any problems getting them to cover anything either.

Well, believe my, I am not making it up ;-). My husband had to get human resources involved, to finally get his money. It wasn't even much, they used a lot of manhours considering all the phone calls, would have been a heck of a lot cheaper for them to pay for the claim in the first place, it was a legitimate claim for an eye exam.
Good night, I am off to watch a movie...

PS, just wanted to say, we are going through the same nonsense now...so whatever you do, do not use BCBS of Missouri. Many people at my husband's company have complained and that is why they are now switching to Anthem.

What I notice is that almost every single socialist health care is having budgetary problems. Huge deficits are taking place every year trying to keep medical care similar to the United States (its as if we are the standard or something). Even Germany is having problems with rate hikes in the near future and problems with keeping pace with current health care standards. The government seems to like rate hikes a lot and I would not trust them to create any new mandatory taxes. I don't know... it took us decades to get rid of the federal excise tax on our telephone bills and we still have the AMT tax...
