I think it is because there are benefits to being married.
The ability of getting a legal divorce is in fact a benefit of marriage.
Remember - the reason why Edie Windsor brought the case all the way up to the Supreme Court was because even though she was married to her spouse, she had to pay a $360,000 tax penalty for being "single" in regards to inheritance taxes.
Yes, there ARE "benefits" to being "married".
Being "married" also creates problems.
Which is what the people in the link in the original post are finding out.
Divorce, of course, is another problem that hasn't really been recognized as yet. Then again, perhaps it HAS been encountered, but it just hasn't been publicized at this time. I'm sure it will be, eventually.
As for the two damfools who just had to get into an argument about homosexuality, many of us JUST DON'T CARE! Why did you two have to subject us all to your silly rants? You accomplished NOTHING!
Why do so many straights not want to get married but rather, prefer to splatter illegitimate babies all over the planet without benefit of making it legal, yet gays are frothing at the mouth to get married?
So are you saying that married heterosexual couples have the same issue of their marriage not being recognized in all states?
That is the issue here. I can go get married where legal, but if I live in a state where it is not recognized, I will have to file two separate tax documents one (federally) as a couple, and one (state) as single.
How many hetero married couples have to do this?
So don't get married.
Or are you saying that you want your same sex marriage, which was legal in the state where you currently reside, to be recognized nationwide?
Okay....what about gun laws, which are also state by state. Should Texas gun laws be recognized in NJ just because the guns were purchased in Texas?

I personally can't wait until we start seeing divorces arising out of civil unions in Colorado. The divorce laws here are so completely whacked, especially when it comes to alimony, that once the male/female gender issues are removed, people will demand that the legislature come to their senses and change the laws to be more reasonable.
They way it is today, anyone who complains is cast as bitter and gender issues are thrown in their faces: "Oh, that's just a bitter old guy who probably abused his wife, he deserves to pay alimony for the rest of his life".
Once lesbian couples start getting screwed over by the ridiculous alimony laws here, the "Women's Lobby of Colorado" that had the laws changed will be inundated with women asking them what the hell they were thinking? They wanted these laws that guarantee alimony in any marriage or civil union over three years, for the highest amounts anywhere, now they can choke on them. Eventually they will change.

Heterosexuals aren't lobbying to change marriage and alimony laws, why would homosexuals?
