What took time was correspondence back and forth between the applicants and the IRS. In addition, the IRS says it was inundated with a flood of applications -- all at a time when Congress was cutting IRS funds.

there is a huge difference between investigation, and harassment. investigation means that they use the tools WITH IN THE LAW to determine whether the exemption applies or not. that means they can check out what the organization does. it does NOT mean that they can demand the donor lists, books the people read, prayers the people say, and any other personal information THAT IS ILLEGAL for the IRS to collect. the average time for approval or denial of tax exempt status, by the IRSs own admission is six months. some of the tea party applications have been drawn out for nearly four years. again i have no issue with investigation, as long as the investigators FOLLOW THE LAWS.
