In 2006, population researchers at the University of Texas discovered that the more often you go to church, the longer you live. In the same year researchers at Duke University in America discovered that religious people have stronger immune systems than the irreligious. They also established that churchgoers have lower blood pressure.

Meanwhile in 2009 a team of Harvard psychologists discovered that believers who checked into hospital with broken hips reported less depression, had shorter hospital stays, and could hobble further when they left hospital – as compared to their similarly crippled but heathen fellow-sufferers.

The list goes on. In the last few years scientists have revealed that believers, compared to non-believers, have better outcomes from breast cancer, coronary disease, mental illness, Aids, and rheumatoid arthritis. Believers even get better results from IVF. Likewise, believers also report greater levels of happiness, are less likely to commit suicide, and cope with stressful events much better. Believers also have more kids.

What’s more, these benefits are visible even if you adjust for the fact that believers are less likely to smoke, drink or take drugs. And let’s not forget that religious people are nicer. They certainly give more money to charity than atheists, who are, according to the very latest survey, the meanest of all.

So which is the smart party, here? Is it the atheists, who live short, selfish, stunted little lives – often childless – before they approach hopeless death in despair, and their worthless corpses are chucked in a trench (or, if they are wrong, they go to Hell)? Or is it the believers, who live longer, happier, healthier, more generous lives, and who have more kids, and who go to their quietus with ritual dignity, expecting to be greeted by a smiling and benevolent God?"

I don't see atheists as mentally ill. I see said persons as needing to be more receptive to the God's word. That's all.

God knows from beginning to end.. his design can be aestetic as well. Why do we have colored eyes, or smooth skin? Why do people have different colored hair and skin? What don't all flowers look the same. God is a God of beauty as well.. sky is blue , big puffy white clouds... why do we see with colors and not black and white?

You're asking the questions, but you are making no effort whatsoever to find the answers even though they are easy to find and easy to understand. It's like there is some kind of halting action in your mind preventing you from making further and more effective inquiry whenever something comes up that even remotely represents a challenge (perceived or otherwise) to your belief system.

I've said it before and I will say it again, these kinds of belief systems are genuine mental diseases. Not a disease affecting one's neurology, but an actual disease of the mind. There is nothing wrong with them organically but rather the patterns of synapses between neurons that store and compute the information that represents their minds has been distorted, causing them to behave erratically and fail to operate at their full intellectual capacity, whatever that may be.

None of that has anything to do with a god and everything to do with the environment we evolved in.

If we were all born with black eyes and scaled reptile skin, our notion of beauty would be for who has the blackest eyes and scaliest skin.

If humans grew up on Mars we'd remark about the beautiful red sky.

None of this points to a creator.

There are no contradictions in the Bible. It is even and balanced..

There will always be those who claim the bible to be wrong.. they did this to Jesus constantly. The Pharisees said Jesus had a devil as he healed on the sabbath.. Jesus told his accusers that the sabbath was made to benefit man , a day of rest.. and that man was not made for the Sabbath. If one has a sheep fall into a ditch , one fetches it out even on the sabbath. Yet God in his wisdom gave man a day of rest- the sabbath.
Look, it's good for you that you believe and that it fulfills and satisfies your life needs, but that is your perspective and personal choice. It does not work for everyone. It is not everyone's reality.

As for the contradictions, there are many and maybe they can be explained away by those that are dogmatic and devout in their belief, but there are enough of these obvious inconsistencies to warrant a very high degree of disbelief and skepticism.

If the level of one's sanity can be inferred from the extent of one's piety, then Hindus and Muslims must be far saner than Christians. The former routinely undertake pilgrimages that involve bathing in and drinking filthy water; the latter are required to pray 5 times per day and to travel to Saudi Arabia at least once during their lives.

And then there are the Tibetan Buddhists who prostrate themselves over and over, sometimes for hundreds of miles. Now that's what I call totally rational behavior.

Why ask why?

Once and still a great song, sky pilot, but I won't muck up the forum with silly man made rock n roll.

Two more songs come to mind, one by Peter Gabriel and the other The Fixx.

You guys are great with the replies today! Time to put on the headphones.

This thread ought to be moved to the religious forum.

If God wants to speak up, he should feel free. I'd be quiote attentive if he pulled the good old burning bush stunt again. But lately, he's been kinda quiet, and so we're saddled with His self-appointed spokesmen - and they're just not the same.
