NYC mayor Bloomberg is proposing that all public housing residents be fingerprinted as a condition of residence in such complexes.
Is this a good idea to fight the higher levels of crime found in such places? - or a "nanny/police state" violation of privacy against people who (for the most part) have done nothing wrong and are simply poor?
I'm especially interested in seeing what Libertarian/Conservatives think on this issue. Many of you complain about the government "overstepping it's bounds" - do you still feel this way when the "targets" are generally minorities in crime-ridden areas? - is that OK then?

Neither a Libertarian or a Conservative but I don't think of them as "targets." I think of them a recipients and what they receive is coming from the American taxpayer. I don't care what ethnicity the recipients are. They are the ones who turn housing projects into crime-ridden areas. If fingerprinting will help then for them it's the cost of doing business with the public's funds.
We already know the crime element is high in public housing.
So yes, fingerprint with application.
And staying in the law should be part of public housing. Get convicted, get thrown out.
Time to clean up the system and give the truly poor a chance at decent living.

But what about the housing projects that are not crime-ridden?

I wouldn't discriminate. If you're going to print for one then print for all.
