This is kind of alternate history.

Lets say there were four official languages, English, Spanish, German, and French.
And each language has an area where it is the primary language.

German speaking states:
North Dakota
South Dakota
Nebraska
Kansas
Minnesota
Iowa
Missouri
Wisconsin
Illinois
Michigan
Indiana
Ohio

Spanish speaking states:
California
Nevada
Colorado
Arizona
New Mexico
Texas

French speaking states:
Louisiana
Maine
Vermont
New Hampshire

English speaking states:
All others that aren't mentioned

So in total:

28 English speaking states
12 German speaking states
6 Spanish speaking states
4 French speaking states

Just a idea in my head.

Where I chose what states spoke what other than English.

German

(German immigration was gigantic in the Midwest in the 19th century. Pennsylvania would be bilingual in English and German, but english would predominate.)

Spanish

(Territory won during Mexican-American war, only a sliver was in Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. and Utah was settled by the Mormons.)

French

I wish America was bilingual in English and French like Canada. Both are the main official languages of the UN, and French is the most beautiful language in the world.

Spanish is spoken by only 12% of the U.S. population, and most second or third generation Hispanic immigrants do not speak Spanish so the Spanish language is basically in decline.

English is the predominant language in 88 countries, French in 33 countries, and Spanish in 20 countries.

What is the point of the poll? Just to guess what alternate language your state might speak in an alternate reality?

The better question, which language should immigrants learn to speak for them to be "culturally assimilated" enough for the anti-foreigner crowd? Or should they have to learn them all to be true Americans?

If you have a young kid, make him/her study Chinese. That is the only useful "foreign" language in the future.

Where is your empirical data that shows Spanish is in decline? By 2050 the majority ethnic group in the US will be Hispanic.

God, I can't WAIT for the people from the "California" thread to come over and see that you lumped their state in the Spanish-speaking group.

But we keep constantly being told that Hispanics are assimilating to English in our country and that by 2-3 generations that Spanish is all but lost. Hmm.

Imagine if the United States was multilingual like Switzerland

If the U.S. was multilingual like Switzerland, then half the country wouldn't be able to understand what the othe half is talking about.

Kind of like right now.
