Looks like Obama has decided that the UN is really just in the way of his plans. I suppose he didn't learn that this had quite a few international disadvantages that still reverberate today when GWB did the same.

The US never looked weaker, more isolated, more out of touch with the world community, and more like a bully than back then. I wonder what this is going to do to the little respect we still enjoy in this world.

At least he's given conservatives a bit of fodder: They can now shout from the rooftops "We told you so!"

What do liberals think of this move?

True. Funny how the very same people that attacked Bush for our involvement in Iraq are so quick to support Obama's plan for indescriminate destruction in Syria. Assad is a POS, but he pales in comparison to Saddam. Just the same, there was(is) no reason for US to be involved in either case. We have no business playing favorites in a civil war between different groups of animals.

bush went to the UN and got approval for his plans for the use of force in iraq and afghanistan. but like the democrats, they didnt really expect bush to USE the force they authorized, and that is why they are upset.

actually in iraq we did have a proper case for going in, even after 12 years. and that is that there was only a cease fire agreement not a peace treaty that ended hostilities, and the fact that saddam constantly violated that cease fire agreement. forget WMDs, the violations of the cease fire gave us all the authority we needed to take out saddam, even without consulting the UN, but bush consulted them anyway.

Correct. There is no difference.
The Middle East has been a war zone for centuries. Only the people odf the Middle East can change that.
Any outside interference only emboldens the extremists.
How this nation has not learned this Lesson yet is astounding. We are dense.

I am sure there are quite a few staunch Obama supporters who are trying to reconcile the news that Obama wants to go it alone with the idea (and carefully crafted image) that he is a President who holds a firm place in the international community.

I suppose it gives the idea of "American Exceptionalism" new meaning.

There are probably people who fit this description. But don't be naïve enough to think that that's a blanket statement that covers all of Obama's supporters. I voted for him twice and I am very displeased with the idea of going to another war.

Allow me if I could, however, to turn the statement around:

Funny how the very same people that HERALDED Bush for our involvement in Iraq are so quick to ATTACK Obama's plan for indiscriminate destruction in Syria.

It's fun to assume we're all the same in our little teams, huh?

Lets make sure we ignor the differences.
Bush got UN approval and a congressional vote in favor of invading Iraq
We know that Obama will not get UN approval at all. He cant even get the Brits to side with him.
Congressional approval is far from a done deal, even with the leadership from both parties supporting him. It looks to be a bi-partisan collapse.

Bush had a plan that was clear from day one. Go in, remove Saddam, stay long enough to prop up a democratically elected government. Obama followed GWBs exit stratagy.

Obama has no serious plan that anyone can really understand. Yesterday on both MSNBC and Foxnews, the phrase that kept coming up was "mission creep". Left and right arent comfortable with the acutal plan.

Speaking of the plan, it appears the plan is simply to "spank" Assad. Not really do anything but drop some bombs on his head.

PS, in direct conflict with your above statement, John McCain has stated he doesnt support the effort because it is not broad enough. He wants regime change. So.... the republicans have been consistant in what they want.
