First what is big government? When did it started in the US ?

Talking to some libertarians and colony supporters/confederate supports they are not happy with conservatives and liberals today .They go on to say that the conservatives and liberals got the ideas from FDR , fascism and communism of big government ideas. The ideas like they can control ,regulate , say want the person can or cannot do , came from FDR , fascism and communism ideas.

Both seem to be cherry picking on big government control. The conservatives that control morality , vice and push god down people throat .The liberals well that have more of welfare state and control capitalism and tell businesses what they can or cannot do.

Some even go on to say that some of the US founding fathers where scared of centralized government body ( abuse of power ) and too much government power .Well we all know that liberals and conservatives = big government and big centralized government .

Others go on to say that civil war was more on state rights and appose centralized government body than it had to do with slavery.Where the history books and want you learn in school does not teach this.

You neglected to mention Reagan, Clinton. and W, under whom government increased substantially as well.

I would say that FDR opened the floodgates with his agency explosion, and once the lobbyists were unleashed and congress began to understand how to use pork to keep themselves in office, it was off to the races!

You could say it started at the very beginning - federalists vs democrat-republicans - Quincy vs Jefferson.

I'm pretty sure the Founding Fathers recognized the necessity and even the value of Government. But I think we agree that the vastness of Government at just about all levels is less than optimal.

BTW if you could wave a magic wand and eliminate as many as 5 cabinet departments, which would you choose.

My list is education, energy, HUD, HHS, and Homeland Security.
