This question reflects a radical shift in the perception of the legislator's responsibility, as perpetrated by right-wingers. We saw this shift most clearly with regard to the sequester, which is similar to a government shutdown in that it was conceived as such a horrific end-result that rational legislators would be so highly motivated to resolve their dispute to avoid triggering the catastrophic ramifications of not doing so. What we see now is how right-wingers actually prefer these horrific end-results - they favor the ramifications despite (or perhaps even due to) their negative impacts on the nation, and its people, including those who work for the public in our government and military. The callous disregard for the impact of the sequester and the government shutdown characterize right-wing perspectives as literally antisocial, and distinctly egoistic, and as such play into the overall right-wing agenda of literally antisocial, and distinctly egoistic public policy.

Being a federal employee deemed essential and who will work through any shut down and did so back in 95/96....I dont think its unreasonable to have troops (regardless of active duty or not) and vets/senior citizens take priority over folks such as me. What is the diffcult part is like at our office, even though deemed essential, leave is cancelled and if you decide to take it you get no guarantee of pay. For example in my case I have leave to take in mid October for my son's doctor appointment 9 hours away (specialist) and to have to choose that over no pay is not fair IMO, especially when such appointment was made over 6 months ago and something that cannot be re-scheduled in short notice.

Listening to obama speak the other night, his undignified manner and his misleading words make me wish the government would come to the crashing halt Obama threatened us with.

the bus has been hijacked and it would be better to go over obama's imaginary cliff than to have obama as the driver down a pothole plagued highway filled with lies and unethical behavior.

Obama can make any shut down as hard or as easy as he wants. Obama victimizes the most vulnerable as he carries out the extortion of the American people for political gain...Obama is a projectionist as he charges his opponents with the same crimes he stands accused of committing.

Legislation to ensure some get paid despite the situation can be subject to executive decree so it comes back to Obama controlling the strings.

Why should a Janitor working as federal employee cleaning up the offices of a government agency be blamed for Obama's problems? Should he be paid later than some millionaire on Social Security? Not everyone working for the Federal Government is evil!

Now back to my original question!

Troops Won't Get Paid During Shutdown - The Daily Beast

Here is my question: IF there is a government shut down should certain groups be guaranteed their pay OVER OTHERS?

If there is limited manpower to administer pay during a shut down should one group get preference over another? Is it fair to hold the pay of the troops and pay Vets/ seniors on Social Security? Should the so called non essential Nurse, or Janitor, or Teacher at a military base who are civil service not active military have to wait for their pay, while troops not in combat get paid? Why should Vets or the retired on Social Security be paid but an essential employee who is working have to wait to be paid until there is a budget?

PLEASE...lets just discuss fairness on who should be paid not the pros and cons and the political aspects of the shut down!

They need to send individual continuing resolutions.
One for SS.
One for the Defense and one for Medicare.

Fund what the house wants and let the senate vote it up or down.

I think this all stems from the nasty precedent of the Tea Partiers, whose goals to pander to their base and screw it to Obama above doing their jobs are legislators have reached a cynical low. They have turned into terrorists. Unless we subscribe to their worldview, with no compromise, they will burn the damn place down. It is undemocratic and antiAmerican.

To address the OP's question, I don't think we should favor certain groups, because we know that will open another partisan can of worms. Military and military contractors and farm subsidies should get paid, but the Fish and Wildlife service should be shut down, etc. That sort of bs is not going to help.

If we are going to shut it down. Shut down the whole damn thing, and let's not forget how ended up here.

So, you expect the guy you elected to represent you, to go against everything they campaigned upon?
You are seeing accountability, as the public gets more educated about politics.

Would you not hold your rep accountable? Or is that unheard of within the party you cling to?

Though I strongly dislike U S foreign policy past and present, I think all military personal active duty or retired should get paid. Even though they were duped or forced into war to protect our country.

Military should be paid first. Then the government workers who perform essential jobs. Then the workers who show up to work but do little. Those who get free money should be the first ones cut off.

Stop the welfare checks first.
