Technology has indeed changed the game my friend.

Electronic everything and massive data mining along with predictive analytics has indeed changed the game.

Why if Hitler had this technology he may have taken over the world.

Because of the fact that we're living in exponential times technology is advancing faster than our ability to control it. Here's an interesting read which proves the point:

The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, a little-known U.S. government organization, is developing analytic programs for the National Security Agency that could make recent revelations about the NSA’s activities look antiquated by comparison. Rather than reviewing archival data, it may use current data to predict the future.

Well keep in mind technology has empowered people more than ever. So I think you are missing the other side of that coin.

This thread is about the NSA and hence my comments.

I totally understand there is good in technology and it has benefited me greatly (retired software engineer).

But such power can be used for good or for bad.
"Privacy" as we know it is long gone.

The contents of your bank account, email, phone conversations are no longer between you and your direct connection to them.

More than likely the government can put your SS into a computer and get your life history including financial information and social information and read the contents if they so desire.

And millions of workers (government and non government) have clearance and access.

True. However, technology can be a great equalizer. Privacy loss can also equate to transparency.

Ironically the internet I think was largely let loose as the network needed to offshore that -33% jobs and build the financial markets. I don't think they counted on the side effects. Must have been salivating over all those dollar signs. LOL.

It is an exception to the central control model in many ways.

This is what a government unmoored from the constraints of the US Constitution looks like.

Apparently, if 0bama thinks we have the technology to do it, and if it's really simple and easy to gather every bit of data he can about "the people," then it's just okie dokie.

Our government becomes more secretive over time.
How's that for transparency ?

HFT trading covers up which bank is doing the dirty deed of flash crashing the stock market.
How's that for transparency ?

The only thing transparent is our personal data now to marketers, governments and anyone with a check in hand to buy if off of those collecting it.

No that isn't the only thing transparent. That is one reason why the govt is becoming more secretive.

A great deal of information is let out in record time on both sides. Individuals now have unprecedented access to all kinds of data and can connect in quick fashion as never before.

Digital records it all. That works on both sides.

It's not just Obama. This was in place before he took office, and he has only perpetuated it during his administration. He didn't start the fire, but he sure as hell kept it burning.

And his successors will continue to take more intrusive steps.
Anyone who doubts that is naive to say the least.
