However, the left has a long tradition of shooting itself in the foot. Instead of being secular, anti-imperialist, skeptical toward traditions, pragmatic and reformist, it often has been anti-religious, anti-national, hostile to traditions, dogmatic and revolutionary. There is nothing mysterious about leftism. It simply means using the power of the state to improve the lives of ordinary people, to combat misery, ignorance and disease, and to promote equality at home and peace abroad.
The leftist position has often been: We will ridicule your religion, mock your traditions and laugh at your nation, but you should vote for us anyway because it is in your economic interest. It is true that it is usually in the interest of ordinary people to vote for a leftist party, but people don’t live by bread alone. Leftists, who themselves have always a keen interest in non-economic matters, often expect ordinary voters to be guided solely by their economic interests. They aren’t.
