Brown/red countries have the death penalty. Blue countries do not. Isn't it interesting how the US has that in common with Iran, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Afghanistan, etc? Think about whether that's a good thing, and do get back to us.
Since when is it important for the US to let other countries set our own standards?

We shouldn't! Why do you think that people broke off from Europe to come here? To get away from all of the crap over there!

Countries don't "set standards" for other countries, but they lead by example. Nice strawman though. Here's the top ten countries listed by number of executions in 2011:

1 China
2 Iran
3 Saudi Arabia
4 Iraq
5 United States
6 Yemen
7 North Korea
8 Somalia
9 Sudan
10 Bangladesh

Interesting, wouldn't you say? Lots of nice vacations spots on that list.

Interesting?

NO! I'd say simplistic in the extreme unless you're also going to compare things like crime rates, murder rates, percentage of populace incarcerated, etc., etc., in ALL the countries you've mentioned, both those with the death penalty and those without.

The point is that the countries on that list aren't good company.

It doesn't matter what other countries do, why would I care? We have to have punishment for crime, the punishment has to be severe enough to detour crime. If ya don't want to pay the price for your crime then don't commit the crime in the first place, it's a simple concept of being responsible for your own actions.

The point is you make a very simplistic argument taking few factors into account.

Considering our record of bombing the crap out of countries that have done nothing to us perhaps the others on the list would say we're not good company, eh?

Sorry, my heart doesn't bleed for murderers.

Intentionally take a life?

Lose your own works for me.

Problem is, the death penalty IS NOT A DETERRENT. You might know this if you bothered to look beyond your own ill-informed opinions.

This issue is a great example of how our own opinions dictate how we think about policy and law. If any of you actually bothered to read (and not the bible), to look at numbers and facts, you might come to a different conclusion than "an eye for an eye."
