I don't think it's because of US fishing boats mainly, but rampant illegal over-fishing (which happens because Somalia doesn't have government capable of stopping it) certainly is, and has long been, a major contributing factor to Somalian piracy.

I don't think his comment was as simplistic as your thread title. The gist of the "entire" conversation was about the Capt. Phillips movie and the "whys" of why we have Somali pirates--no one ever asks. I guess they think people grow up in a beautiful place a decide to become pirates? No, his comment was about the country of Somalia and how it has been destroyed leaving it's inhabitants with nothing but a life a crime in order to live.

We are overfishing the Grand Banks and pretty much everywhere else in the northwest Atlantic yet we don't seem to have any pirates off the New England coast.
Those poor people are pawns to the vicious warlords war machines in a fractured country. They are clan loyal,high on Khat and have been pirating the highseas forever for booty.I say send fatboy over there as a special envoy to get the real skinny of their story...
