Putting a highly trained member of the police force down is a bit excessive. Firing them should be enough to correct the problem. I would kill the dog though.
The dog was doing what it was trained to do. Any honest K9 handler will tell you that the dog can react before they have a chance to react, so it would have been too fast for the officer to pull the dog back in time....
...which is WHY they should never have put a 5th grade child in front of that dog.
I get that they were trying to make kids aware, and sometimes kids respond better when they are taught by their peers, but, you don't do that with a K9 cop.
It might have worked, in the end. Some of those kids will remember that having drugs on you may mean you get bitten, or mauled. Speaking of which, look at the media lie again. The kid did not get mauled.
I do wish to commend the parent for not being sue happy like so many in this country. Her kid will be fine.
Uhm, he didn't say it was the kids fault. He explained what he felt triggered the dog's actions. While everyone else knew it was a staged event, the dog didn't and followed his training.
Strange how the mom of the this boy is understanding about what has happened but you seem ready to put down a highly trained member of the police force over one small incident.
This was ill planned. If the dog was capable of this it shouldn't have been around children. Doesn't sound properly trained or trained for the circumstance. NM under what circumstances should drugs be planted on an elementary student. It's ridiculous.

“As I got closer to the actors, Max began searching the juveniles,” according to the officer’s report. “The first male juvenile began moving his legs around as Max searched him. When the male began moving his legs, (this is what) I believe prompted Max’s action to bite the male juvenile on the left calf.”

Notice the typical hero cop attitude that it was the fault of the child for moving his legs that caused the dog to bite him, not that they planted drugs on him and then failed to restrain the dog properly.
Pink slips for all of them.
Oh and we all know what happens to the dog of a private citizen if it so much as looks at a cop cross eyed...bang bang!
The dog that bit my daughter when she was 2, got a Buck Lock Blade in the left lung.

It is extreamly strange. But this mother is not the totality of the parents who's children were involved. Her "understanding" is irrelevant. The police and school's administation should always have the children's safety foremost as their concern. Not training, not exposing the children to drug search procedures...safety.
The last concern should be that of the officer's "reputation".
Excusing the actions of a good officer makes it easier to excuse the actions of a bad officer.
