Kshama Sawant, a self-described Marxist from a national group called 'Socialist Alternative' has taken a 41 vote lead against a longtime liberal Councilman named Richard Conlin. She teaches economics at Seattle Central Community College.
Socialist Sawant now leads Seattle council race by 41 votes | Local News | The Seattle Times

I can't remember any elected Republicans from Seattle at any level in the 20+years that I've been here. The spectrum runs from center left to far left. Here's a video of Sawant. It's very long, but you can listen to about 2-3 minutes starting at 17:00 where she talks about all the high net-wealth households in Seattle. Then she decries the fact that we can get our hands on that money for public purposes such as transit, and to plug a $56 million city budget shortfall.

Then around 27:00 there is an interesting segment where she talks about her wish to convert Boeing to a "democratic public ownership." In other words, it would be in line with the classic definition of socialism: government ownership of the means of production.

They've had a statue of Lenin there for some time. A Marxist in the City Council is what's been missing.

If she wins it will be interesting to see how it turns out, especially the taking over of Boeing for the people.

Here's another talk from her that is more listenable. This was her campaign kickoff, and her talk here is only about 9 minutes. She talks about why she is running against the liberal Richard Conlin. City Council members make over $100K, and she says that she will only take whatever amount the average Seattle worker makes and put the rest towards the socialist cause. One of her priorities is bringing the $15 minimum wage to Seattle.

Boeing's operations are located almost entirely outside Seattle city limits, so her ability to effect any change in its ownership will be precisely zilch.

Quite interesting platform she's running on.
All social issues will be addressed and fully funded.
And the only tax mentioned to pay for this is a millionaire tax.

And on education issues..not one word of academics here..all social issues of bullying, racism and sexism and promoting LGBT

Issues - Vote Sawant

Very interesting, Seattle is definitely not a far right wing haven by any means. Anyone expecting it to be will be sorely disappointed.

Sounds enlightened. In this country conservatives use "socialism" like it's a curse word. In Europe it's just a competing political party.

Enlightened? Well maybe,if your goal is to steal as much as you can from those you consider wealthy in order to fund your own selfish schemes.
