Churches aren't taxed because most of the money given by the congregation goes directly back into the community and abroad with charities, missions, hospitals & aids.
That's probably not true, but I'll give you an opportunity to present your evidence that "most" of the money collected by churches is spent on something other than the church's own operations, staff, worship, activities, and programs.
Churches aren't bad, but they're nowhere near as charitable as you pretend.
One loss, IMO, is the mega-churches, in particular, would have far less money to influence our politicians with their right wing agenda. But if our politicians are dependent on this income/campaign contributions, what incentive would they have to tax the churches?
One big gain would be more money coming into the Treasury.
When this exclusion was first considered, our Founding Fathers were looking at the little white neighborhood churches. Mega-churches didn't show up on their radar screens back then.
So has the time come to start taxing these churches/corporations? And how on earth would that ever happen? The mega churches would scream and howl from one end of the earth to the other!
LOL, churches beeing taxed. In Europe it's the different way around. There you are taxed for maintaining churches.
I doubt that this will happen. Why? Because what a lot of nonreligious folks don't realize is that there are a lot more churches that are not "megachurches" These are often very liberal groups of people. Can you imagine the screaming in the black community if their church property was taxed? Its not likely either liberals or conservatives in govt. would want to anger these folks. These are groups that are often politically involved, plus who wants to go on record as taxing God.

Funny how people forget that part when they want to talk about church money. They do more for the community and the world than liberals have ever done.
If the Church wants a place at the political table, then the Church should be willing to pay for the privilege instead of demanding a free pass. Free speech has it limits; and preaching politics from the pulpit is over the line.

As long as a church doesn't want to get into the political arena, then I don't have a problem with them being tax-exempt, but as soon as they start to do things that influence elections, then they are no longer using their resources for "charities, missions, hospitals & aids." It's not funny AT ALL and people shouldn't overlook how 'church money' is being used.

Wrong....If you remove protection from taxation you remove the seperation of church and state. Do you really want the power of the international Cathloic church to start buying a full time lobbiest in DC???
Churches that provide care to the needy, charity, and help to people shouldn't be taxed.
Greedy televangelists that fleece their congregations for lavish lifestyles should be taxed on their greed. That's not following Jesus's word.
