Yes, it is. And so I propose that America abandon Santa-as-fat-old-white-man and create a new symbol of Christmas cheer. From here on out, Santa Claus should be a penguin.
Thank God...I was just thinking that Santa Claus being a white man was really ruining this nation. If we could just change Santa to an animal that this nation could really turn it around, unemployment would go down, wages would rise, and peace and love will reign on Earth.
Please, I mean seriously? People have way too much time on their hands. The Santa Claus legend/myth largely stems from St. Nicholas of eastern Europe and the Yule and Odin folklore of the Germanic/Scandinavian areas of western Europe. Thus Kriss Kringle, Santa Claus, Father Christmas, etc. would traditionally be portrayed as a white man of European descent.
HOWEVER...Santa Claus isn't real so this all really doesn't matter. If it makes people feel warm and tingly inside to see penguin Santa or black Santa or Asian Santa it's really no skin off my back. Santa Claus is a fictional character so it doesn't really matter what you portray him as.
