I think he was saying that he was with the blacks, picking cotton. He was just as poor and discriminated against as a swamp person. What you see him saying is just his ignorance of what blacks were going through that he himself didn't see. I'm glad you understand that it wasn't meant to be mean-spirited, just ignorant of what your family was encountering in their daily lives.
Understand what you are saying, but it is not exactly the same thing. Could white swamp people vote? Were any of the white swamp people's ancestors owned, like an object? It's one thing to be looked down upon. It's another to be denied your humanity and rights.
Why would Phil say "no comment" when he did have a comment? He was honest, there is nothing wrong with honesty.
It's like asking a KKK clansman or white supremacist to be 'honest' about their opinion about black people. Or a neo-nazi skinhead their opinion about Jews.
Nothing wrong with honesty. And there's nothing wrong with being honest calling them out on their hate-filled opinions is there?
I did not read the GQ article, but I assume that Phil responded to a question ~ right? So GQ asked him a question and he answered it ~ right? Of course, I'm sure the interviewer knew that Phil is a conservative, which leads me to suspect that there was a set-up. Too bad Phil didn't sense that one coming and just say "no comment". But A&E probably would have $hit their pants, anyway.
What's funny is that his family are now blaming A&E for not stepping in to stop the GQ article from being published.
"Duck Dynasty star and family hit out at A&E for letting his controversial interview go public. You have to ask yourself, why this interview happened and why it ever became public,' said a source close to the family"
What should Phil have said or done? What could he have said that would have been honest and yet not upsetting to gays?
Why do you think he wanted to make comments about gay people at all? He wasn't asked a question about gay people. He was asked what he thought was sinful - and gay people were his first thought. What does that say about him?

If this isn't the biggest non story every in the history of the universe I don't know what is.
