I find this unacceptable for our military to implement such drastic change to these regulations. With this relaxation of the rules, we will get away from our 'uniformity and conformity' that makes the United States Military unique and exemplary as a first rate fighting force. Lt. Col. Alan West makes a great case of why this is all wrong. I agree with him. Do you?
Here's the actual proposed changes. It should be noted that the wear of turbans had previously been allowed. The wear of yarmulkes have been allowed since Reagan's presidency. This is something where the pendulum goes back and forth.

I believe the fact that the states are "unique and exemplary as a first rate fighting force" is due to the insane/riduclous amount of money you overspend on military and not due to the fact that you haven't let people fashion beards etc.

They have to relax them or nobody will be eligible to join if we want to maintain the size of the military we have. If you want an all volunteer force, you have to be willing to accept the volunteers. Personally I would rather judge the person on the ability to do their job.

Beards are only allowed in the Navy. Both the Army and the Marine Corps require a clean-shaven face, as a compelling interest in the health and safety of their personnel. You cannot get a proper seal in gas mask if you have a beard. So you are not likely to see any Muslim or Orthodox Jew sporting beards while on active duty in either the Army or Marine Corps.
