Ha, I remember that insanity. But hey, if parents in Oakland want that in their schools, so be it. It wouldn't even be on the radar in my NW New Jersey enclave.

Ebonics is a disgrace. The students have trouble with the language. So let's lower the standard and create a fake language that does them no good later in life instead of rolling up the sleeves and have parents, teachers and students work to improve. Oakland has enough problems and then creates another for no reason at all.
Technically this is not true. Noah Webster (namesake of Webster's Dictionary) is credited with "Americanizing" the English language. He changed the spelling of a lot of words to make them more phonetic. For example, "plough" became "plow". There are many other such differences between British English and American English. Another example I can think of off the top of my head, "colour" became "color". You'll also notice a switching of "r" and "e" at the end of words (theatre - theater, centre - center).
The "Americanizing" of the English language doesn't even account for the many regional differences in this country. We have different names for animals (a buffalo and a bison are not the same thing), bodies of water (stream, run, creek, crick), food (sub, hoagie, hero, grinder) etc. We have regional slang and different pronunciations of the same words. I grew up in New Jersey. We pronounce "water" "wooder". No reason to be so uptight about how people speak because there are countless differences that are officially recognized (British vs. American English) and at the end of the day we all use some form of slang so personally, I don't care what kind of slang other people use.

So, I read through all three articles, looking for an example of black students complaining about their grammar being critiqued. But, guess what I found? Absolutely no reference in the article to "black"students complaining that they were being more harshly critiqued. Instead, there is a reference to "students of color," which could include black, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, etc. Additionally, one of the articles references Dr. Head's lawsuit and the investigation conducted by UCLA – both of which determined there were discriminatory practices in place at the University. Yet, as usual, this discussion has devolved into "blacks" being victims. How interesting…

Even saying "students of color" CAN be "racist" IMHO since some "Hispanics" are def white and some Asians even have pasty white skin tho I agree 100 percent with what you're saying.
Of course it's not. How dare you not just let him skate by on the merits of his skin color while everyone else in the class works hard to enhance their academic skill-sets.
This world needs more people who haven't earned anything. More free money. More free grades. More free education. More free healthcare.
