There's been no real reduction in the number of U.S. school shootings despite increased security put in place after the rampage at a Connecticut elementary school in December 2012 left 20 children and six educators dead.

An Associated Press analysis finds that there have been at least 11 school shootings this academic year alone, in addition to other cases of gun violence in school parking lots and elsewhere on campus when classes were not in session.

Even though it is incredibly tragic when a school shooting occurs, and the media covers it non-stop for days when it happens, the odds of it happening are minuscule. Last count there were 132,000 public K-12 schools in this country. That means there is a .0083% chance of one happening at your local public school, or approximately 1 out of every 12,000 schools.
