I'm sure many have heard about the latest scandal in France about the president breaking up with his companion after being caught cheating.

I'm sure such thing would never be unaccepted in the US whereas here in Europe a few weeks from now nobody will remember it anymore, but I'm still curious about how many Americans would react.

The question is not really her being together with the president but the fact she assumed the position of first lady without being married. Would you be okay with it?

She received a taxpayer funded monthly income of €45,000, had 5 personal servants, her own security team and could use official transportation even on private business (like picking up her children at school).

Of course a US president being caught outside his mistress's apartment would mean a major political earthquake (quite possibly his resignation).

Please; Clinton didn't resign even though the evidence of his affair with Monica Lewinsky was splattered all over her famous blue dress.

I wouldn't care if the President was unmarried. However I don't think a girlfriend (or boyfriend for that matter) rates a salary and a personal staff either.

Girlfriends shouldn't get first lady perks, way to much room for drama. Didn't Lincoln or somebody have a sister or cousin fill in after their wife died?

I'm sure they had some kind of blood bond with the president, though. A completely different situation.

If she's his girlfriend and they aren't married, what's the big deal?

Don't spend public money on her because they ain't married. Oh but have a ceremony, and we can lavish her with millions in perks.

Really...I've got better things to worry about relative to public money. Like the 2 billion a week on the Afghanistan deployment.

Would I rather the president be married. Perhaps...symbolism is important. But I wouldn't think about it longer than 2 seconds.

Marriage is way overrated.

Yes because in America the hypocrisy of phony outrage against affairs in marriage is beyond juvenile. It is a media ploy that Europeans do not fall for as much. Life goes on, regardless.

so true, philP agree. Divorce at over 60% in America now, so the radical right and its puritanical ways are archaic.
