This is probably as good an answer that has been offered thus far. Crimea was the last staging ground for the White Anti-Bolshevik Russians. Stalin pushed them out of Crimea and the population that lives there now are mostly ethnic Russians who are holdovers from the Soviet era. The Russians probably view Crimea in the same way that the Chinese see Taiwan - they never really wanted to give it up but had to during a time when it was weak and humiliated on the international stage. The only difference is that unlike Taiwan, the population seems to welcome a foreign invasion.

Putin is an old Red. I think he's practical enough to understand that he can't do anything suicidal, and he was probably willing to stay on the sidelines. But when Ukraine started tilting away from Russia, that was the last straw. He came to power not necessarily to restore the Soviet Union, but to save Russia from further embarrassment, to hold the line. It's putting the world on notice that it's not going to just let the U.S. and its allies wrest political and economic influence away from Russia. Not when there is a thousand-year ethnic, cultural, and political connection to some of these territories.

Once again, so what?

Paul is just another retired politician these days, and his ideas never got him very far anyway.

We were part of the agreement removing weapons and nukes from the Ukraine that made this all possible. they exchanged nukes for guarantees to not be invaded. 1 of the signing parties reneged.

I think its our moral duty to return to them some of the nukes that they gave up for that now breached agreement.
