Who was watching the government coffers when Medicare under Reagan approved heart transplants? No wonder we have a Tea Party thats in awe of President Reagan. How many of these transplants have failed and how many years were added to peoples lives that were 65+ years old? Bush passed Medicare Part D which is being abused. Medicare spending is out of control and dwarfs the ACA. Up to 35% of Medicare recipients have three or more pain killer prescriptions. Lets not talk about Medicare abuse or spending lets keep our focus on the ACA. Republicans do have a solid plan though for 2014 attack the ACA and keep the base alive whatever the cost...its only taxpayers money.
Are you saying people shouldn't get a heart transplant? Or are you saying that only the rich who can afford$100,000, $200.000 or so for the operation should be the only ones receiving one? Or perhaps your saying that only the young should receive a transplant? How about someone younger then 65 who is disabled?
And what is so bad about part D drug plans? Have you priced the cost of some prescriptions. That part D can be a lot of help. Or, once again, I guess only the rich should be the ones who receive medication.

The abuse of medications is why I think all Medicare recipients should have to enroll in an advantage care plan. The private companies monitor that type of behavior very well and put a quick stop to it when they see abuse.

With transplants their is no preference on who gets one from age 18+. A senior has just as good a chance as someone 30 years old with three kids..in fact arguably better when you consider seniors are covered by Medicare and people under 30 have very high rates of being uninsured. I find it amusing that one age group of government health care recipients wants to get rid of the ACA which covers younger people. As Avik Roy pointed out in Forbes the Republican base is covered by $750 billion dollars in health care spending and has no interest in seeing other people get affordable insurance.
Actually here's a routine situation that should make even the most liberals of liberals angry at their own social programs:
(and it's true and repeats itself day after day, year after year)
1. Family on food stamps (poor eating). Child gets fat, really fat, eventually super morbidly obese as an adult.
2. Because they are so fat as adult, they eventually develop back problems, which further worsens their weight problems because they can't do any activities.
3. These people eventually go on government medicaid/welfare....than finally get approved for disability benefits.
4.Because they are super morbidly obese, they need gastric bypass surgery (which is approved by both medicaid and medicare).....guess what CMS doesn't even require gastric bypass surgery to be even performed by "certified centers any more" because Obama and HHS waived those requirements in late 2013.
it creates government liabilities that are not funded by the payroll tax ... therefore it drives up the national debt.
but because it is part of medicare, politicians can say, "Oh we can't cut that, people paid for their medicare." (Ignoring the parts of it which are unfunded)
basically anyone who supports Medicare Part D, and complains about welfare (or the deficit) is a tremendous hypocrite. This describes quite a few of our elderly right-wingers out there.

That was the range of cost in the 80's. All in, the current costs are $1 million +.-.
Most, regardless of age, who could benefit from a transplant die waiting because there are more in need than hearts available. Most, who are 65 and older do not qualify because of other complications. Very few hospitals will perform a heart transplant on anyone over 65.
Part D is a swell benefit that none of the beneficiaries paid a dime for. It's all deficit spend. Congress could easily reduce this cost by allowing Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription meds. But that would mean biting the Big Pharma hand that feeds them.
