I repeat: gays need to stop suing these small businesses and find another bakery who will gladly bake them their rainbow cakes. You have the right to take your business elsewhere. You don't have the right to sue to put them out of business in order to push your Gay Agenda.
Obtuse about what? A business is an entity of the state and in exchange for limited liability and all sorts of tax benefits a business abides by the rules of said state. If the state has decided that sexual orientation is a protected class along with race, religion and national origin then the business in that state cannot discriminate against them. Now the business owner, who may be black, white, Christian, Hindu, whatever, is perfectly able to hate whomever he wants and not speak to whomever he wants, but his business cannot refuse service to others in a protected class. If he wants to do that he can incorporate as a social enterprise under not for profit status, but until that time if he bakes rainbow cakes for straight white males then he has to bake rainbow cakes for gay black lesbians, or anyone else that walks through his door.
Again a business doesn't have a religion or a race. A business has tax benefits.
Should an Obama supporter who owns a car detailing business be allowed to refuse to work on this car? I think so.
Actually I believe they legally could. Now they couldn't refuse service to the owner of said vehicle if (s)he came in with another vehicle that didn't have that paint job, but you have every right to refuse service based upon speech.
The federal government classifies race and gender of the business on the race/gender of the business owners, so why can't they classify the religion of the business on the religion of the owner?
The state Senate and state House have passed final version SB 2681 known as “Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”
This bill opens the door to discrimination against LGBT people in the form of refusing service at restaurants, etc based on owner of business religious belief. It now heads to the Governor.
Got to hand it to the GOP and their religious right overlords, they never fail to come up with solutions in search of a problem.
Everybody knows what these laws are really about and who they are really aimed at, and it aint about protecting "religious freedom."
It's about giving an acceptable veneer to prejudice, plain and simple. Nobody who is actually paying attention is fooled though.
This law makes no provision on if their discrimination is based on fact. They can discriminate against you if they THINK you are gay.
A waste of tax money homophobic and bigoted separate the church and state!
Discrimination is the ultimate freedom.
Every free thinking person discriminates everyday and almost every minute of the day.
Having a choice is discriminating about the one you didn't pick.
Our days are full of choices. Opportunities arrive to discriminate, each time you make a choice.
The federal government classifies race and gender of the business on the race/gender of the business owners, so why can't they classify the religion of the business on the religion of the owner?
That's the ownership structure of the business. The business itself cannot be black and cannot refuse to service to other ethnicities.
