A science teacher in Los Angeles has been suspended because his students constructed a project designed to help them understand linear acceleration - which staff at the school described as an "electric coil gun".

Quote:
Greg Schiller was suspended from the Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts (map) in February when another employee raised concerns that two of Schiller’s students made projects that looked like weapons, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The projects, which were designed to launch small projectiles, have been confiscated by LAUSD as evidence, one parent told the Times. Schiller said he did not get a chance to grade the students’ work.

“I discussed with them scientific principals but … the projects were removed before I had an opportunity to fully examine them,” Schiller said.

Since the suspension, students, former students, parents and the teacher’s union have come to Schiller’s defense.

“We want Mr. Schiller back. We want him out of ‘teacher jail.’ We want him reinstated,” student Samantha Healy said during the protest. “No one got hurt, no one was going to get hurt".
This liberal zero-tolerance nonsense is really getting out of hand if students can't even be taught scientific principles without some hand-wringing "protector" getting their panties in a wad.

The protesting students have more maturity than the school administrators.

The only dangerous people here are the ones that suspended him, they should be instituted and examined. Pathetic

Isn't Los Angeles USD the fine group of useful idiots that spent $578 million building a single high school?

Why, yes it is.

Aren't they the same group of out-of-touch morons that spent $1 billion -- yes, I said "billion" -- building THREE high schools since 2009?

Why, yes they are.

Only a liberal school district would waste over half a billion dollars on a school, and in a nod to gun control, decide to build it on the same piece of land where Robert Kennedy got shot. Somehow, this latest story about the escapades of LAUSD does not shock me.

We're not laughing with you, LAUSD, we're laughing at you. Only this isn't funny.

Zero tolerance is stupid and should be removed as school policy. Everything has some sort of context.

“We will always err on the side of protecting students..."
No, they will always err on the side of dumbing down students. The good news is, these kids are learning a valuable lesson that liberal "zero tolerance" rules are bullspit.

We made volcanoes back in the day.
That would be considered terrorism today.

Some of those paper mache volcanoes blew up rather than just bubble up the foam.
We thought it was cool.

They're probably not even allowed near Bunsen burners anymore...you know, because they are so "dangerous".
