TNS Survey - Press Release
The problem with the liberterians is that they want open borders and unlimited immigration --- and it doesn't bother them that the bulk of those pouring over the border want welfare handouts because they lack the ability to provide for their extra large numbers of children themselves. The politicans promising them the most government gets their votes.

You can't have an over-populated nation and libertarianism.

In the USA, it's the welfare class growing by leaps and bounds, those least capable of providing for their offspring are encouraged to have the most of them. We're importing very large levels of poverty.

The obvious solution would be to cut the handouts. Once the gray train stops, and they realize they're not getting freebies, it will stop. However; will our government stop with the freebies? Unlikely.

The hardcore libertarians who want full open borders also want to do away with welfare. Immigrants would have to succeed on their own just like the immigrants of past who came here to work and build up the country.

I almost agree with this. Really, though, the United States should look to its peer, rich nations. If we compare our form of government to poor, developing countries, then we have already lost the war.

Amongst the diversified, rich nations, the US is among the smallest governments in terms of domestic affairs (and by far the largest in terms of foreign affairs). Our ruling parties both have mixed ideologies. Democrats tend to be comparatively libertarian on "social" issues and foreign affairs and authoritarian on "economic" issues (I use quotation marks because the social/economic faultline is imperfect, but I think it is workable). Republicans tend to be comparatively authoritarian on "social" issues and foreign affairs, but libertarian on "economic" issues.

We also have a weak central government when it comes to domestic affairs, so our resulting policies are ideologically fractured by the influence of each of the parties at the federal, state, and local levels. This system is quite unlike those of the other nations with diverse economies, most of which have strong central governments but more political parties (with a broader range of political ideologies). Our closest analogue is probably the UK, which is quite different.

Because it's an observed phenomenon in nature, having to do with speciation in living organisms. It's not supposed to be the foundation for an ethos. Sheesh.

Yes, that's what I meant - being a little sarcastic in reference to post #129 above that one

Back on topic, government is a crutch for people that can't self-regulate. That's true. As far as the intellect thing goes, the stupidest people I've ever met in my life have either been atheists or collectivists(liberals/democrats/socialists/communists/progressives). And 90% of the time, if they are being truthful, they are one and the same thing(Govt is their God). Who is more stupid is really a toss up. Both groups say they are independent while their name and actions are explicitly dependent upon the very thing they loathe.
The wealthiest cities in this country are liberal/big govt, the richest states are the same, and the most generally prosperous countries in the world are liberal forms of capitalism - sometimes bordering on non-marxist socialism.
