.....and have any rent savings go right toward the cost of commuting and lose years of your life in traffic. Problem in DC that even in the far exurbs like Stafford, Fredericksburg, Frederick, and Columbia, crappy apartments START at $900. And count on at least a 90 min door to door commute from these parts.
the great folly of the middle class was losing their home via refi fevor getting money for trips cars and college tuition.
bad move. "its a wonderful life" movie in reverse.
Glad I live in the rust belt! It may not be mainstream trendy, and more difficult to find employment, but it's certainly affordable to live in a cool urban neighborhood.
The end result of this could be a good thing. Large metro areas hopefully will price themselves out of existence, leading to a resurgence of smaller cities and towns. Good thing all the way around. Who wants to live in some huge, overcrowded concrete jungle?
Pfft... If you want to pay reasonable rents, get over your fear of living next to Blacks and Browns.
Bingo.
And stop worrying about living in the trendy neighborhood. Why pay hundreds extra a month when you can just drive there in 10 minutes. Who wants to pay more to live by a bunch of hipsters anyway.

Clearly you two aren't from the Bay Area or NYC, lol. I've been a white MINORITY in my last few neighborhoods, and have paid between $1660-2195 for 1-3 bedrooms... currently paying $1720 for a 1br apartment in San Jose, which is about evenly divided between three ethnic groups. Heck, even when I lived in the straight-up ghetto I was paying out the wazoo! It was $900/mo for that place over 10 years ago, and rents for around $2200 today (saw a listing for the complex not long ago). Frustrating thing is that I'd still be paying only $900ish if I had stayed put, as that town has the strictest rent control around. Oh well.
So yeah, even those of us who aren't afraid of diversity can't always find something cheap. And before anyone says I should move, I'm not actually complaining about this - as I have a fantastic job, grew up here, and can only think of a few other places I might enjoy equally. Just explaining how things work in the most expensive metros, as even our non-hipster/white neighborhoods cost serious bank. Low wage-earners here not only live in the "diverse" neighborhoods, but usually have multiple roommates, other family members with earnings, rent control, and/or subsidies to assist. That's reality, and more reality is that we couldn't survive without them. Who would do all the low-wage jobs if they left tomorrow?

Rent is absolutely out of control. I had an efficiency in DC making minimum wage. My dad had to co sign because I didn't make enough. But I made every single payment on time. You can't afford an apartment now making minimum wage

Could you ever, though? Maybe in a place like rural Kansas or Montana, but even 20+ years ago you'd need more than minimum wage to afford rent (without roommates or partner/spouse) in the bigger metros. How old are you?
That being said, yes it IS out of control in the cities mentioned throughout this thread. Not because you can't afford rent on minimum wage, but more because a professional salary like mine can barely cut it!
