This from an academic advisor to athletes, mainly football and basketball players, and the University of North Carolina. When she spoke up, they banished her to a basement office, She resigned.

The entire education establishment is using and abusing these kids. One in 10,000 will make it to the pros, and the rest will have to fend for themselves with 8th grade reading level in an info tech world. And not many jobs out there for African and Afro-American Studies grads.
If it were up to me, I would eliminate all intermural sports from colleges.

Surprising- The ACC ranks #1 in academic standards for their atheletes. The Big Ten is second. The SEC needs to tighten up thier academic standards, as the Big Ten does. Big Ten atheletes are required to meet admission requirements and maintenance of academic standards as the rest of the student body. No wonder the SEC is the perennial powerhouse of NCAA football.

Many of these colleges have personal tutors for these players as well.
It's pretty sad the lengths they go to in order to promote college sports.
They are also pushed into taking online classes and who knows who is answering the test questions at the other end of the computer.

If you are a STUD, you make money for the university, more than they spend to get and keep you there.
Show me the money!

I don't know for sure, but I would bet those dismal reading stats would reflect the abilities in all US citizens. We are getting dumber and dumber as a nation. College degrees don't mean much anymore and are a dime a dozen as the standards have been lowered more and more.

Sadly, I think you're closer to the truth than most realize.

They are doing the same thing in HS with students in athletics.
They can barely read and get "accommodations" during tests and extra tutoring to keep their passing grades so they can stay on the team.
