The poor tipping came first. This topic was discussed on here before and I think this study might be the same one. Anyway, the researchers found that blacks tipped less after you controlled for income, service, quality, location, etc and concluded that the restaurant industry should do more to educate customers about tipping norms. Strangely, there was no difference in tipped amounts for the barbers, maids, or bellhop professions.
Though it should suck to have a job where you depend on tips. The whole idea of tips should be because of extra ordinary performance. It's extra. In theory, it shouldn't be a necessity. Yet it seems it is at restaurants. How much do waiters and waitresses make on average an hour?
I think it's fairly well known among servers that senior citizens, Europeans, Australians, and women tip considerably less than the standard 15-20%. This is not a racial thing.
Maybe Australians should just stay home and have a vegemite sandwich.

The median is around $10/hr, but it depends on the type of restaurant and clientele.
Blacks earn less on average. I think this has more to do with the income of attendees than it has to do with race. It's not hard to believe that a waitress would earn more in tips in lower Manhattan than a waitress would at diner in Chattanooga Tennessee despite both regions are inhabited predominately by whites.

It depends on the restaurant. I have a restaurant that is part of a hotel that I own. Most of the tips are left on credit cards or the room. In 2013, the average at our restaurant was $19.30/hr. Probably insignificantly higher when you add cash tips.
The minimum, however, is $7.25/hr at a lawfully run establishment.

I think if all that be the case, servers should serve with excellence without the expectation of tips. So it doesn't matter if black people tip or not, as long as one is getting paid what he/she agreed to when they were hired.
