In Michigan where my girls worked as wait staff, their hr rate was less than minimum wage bc of tips. Think $2.30/h during early 2000.

But they still went home with the minimum wage no matter what their tips were. In Michigan, it's currently $7.40/hr.

A number of states are allowed to pay servers less than minimum wage and count their expected tips as part of their income.
