From your link:

Quote:
The Nordic island has no standing army and is one of the most progressive nations on the planet.
That's why they're so peaceful.

Iceland is one of the most progressive nations on the planet: its welfare system offers health care and higher education for each of its 320,000 citizens; it is powered in large part by renewable geothermal energy; and it was one of the first countries in the world to legalize gay marriage.

This is interesting concerning gun control.

GunPolicy.org estimates there are approximately 90,000 guns in the country - in a country with just over 300,000 people.

The country ranks 15th in the world in terms of legal per capita gun ownership. However, acquiring a gun is not an easy process -steps to gun ownership include a medical examination and a written test.

Police are unarmed, too. The only officers permitted to carry firearms are on a special force called the Viking Squad, and they are seldom called out.

I think his point was that Iceland is large homogenous in terms of its population. Diversity doesnt really exist, you have likeminded people from similar backgrounds, motivations and cultural norms. Not many sources of conflict.

That said, their entire nation only stands based on the grace of others. Without any army theyre basically betting on their allies to save them in case **** hits the fan.

What they need to do is cut all the welfare programs, throw people in the street, pump toxic clouds of carbon smoke into the air and sludge into the water, spend over 75% of their tax revenue on the military so that they can kill all manner of innocent civilians all around the world with unmanned drones and hellfire missiles, ban abortion and birth control, replace all HS courses with readings from The Bible, and outlaw higher education.

god bless america

According to Iceland's Multiculturalism Information Center, 8.9% of Iceland's population (as of 2011) consisted of first- and second-generation immigrants. Its immigrants come from 137 countries. Most are from eastern Europe, but there is a significant number from the Philippines, Thailand, and elsewhere.

Did you know that

One of its MPs (again, as of 2011) is a Palestinian woman. Considering its parliament has only 63 members, even having just 1 "multicultural" member is quite significant.

Maybe the OP should take note of how well progressive economic policies work (Iceland) instead of conservative (the American South). The difference is pretty clear.

Even more white people........if that's what you're arguing for as diversity, its not going very well.

The population is whiter than Utah. 80%+ live in urban areas, go to the same church....etc. Its about as homogenous as it gets.

I'm pretty moderate and I'd be happy living in Iceland, their society has the proper respect for free speech and liberty and everything is well balanced but there's no way you can transfix what has happened there and apply it to most other nations.
