Everyone's favorite alphabet agency, the IRS, is back in the news for their financial savvy.

It seems Obama's watchdog -- err, the Internal Revenue Service -- has been making the news again, this time for making HALF A TRILLION DOLLARS in improper payments over the last 5 years.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tax credits for families that don't qualify. Medicare payments for treatments that might not be necessary. Unemployment benefits for people who are secretly working. Federal agencies reported making $100 billion in payments last year to people who may not have been entitled to receive them.

Congressional investigators say the figure could be even higher.

"The amounts here are absolutely staggering," said Rep. John Mica, R-Fla. "It's over $100 billion each of the last five years. That's a staggering half a trillion dollars in improper payments."

Given that this is the agency that spawned Lois "Slow" Lerner and her magical computer problems, I cannot say this shocks me. Government at its best is ineffecient. Bigger government is just more ineffecient.

Improper payments by federal government top $100B

It's not their money so why should they care ?
The government doesn't care if it loses money because they are not accountable like a business.
They can take on debt that may never be paid back and they have an endless revenue stream (taxpayers).

Do away with the IRS branch and go to a consumption tax.

Corrupt politicians like Obama will always try to use the IRS to steal political opponents constitutional rights.

Other corrupt people can use the IRS to an advantage too.

Although no system is perfect, a consumption tax would eliminate a lot of loop holes and corruption.

Federal employees pay income tax as well, so they have just as much skin in the game as you and as such, your statement makes no sense. The government isn't a coherent living being, so it can't have emotions and as such can't care about anything. Our debt is mostly caused by us all living beyond our means and not paying enough taxes to fund our lavish lifestyles. The private sector data mirrors this in the average American's personal life as well.

That happened all of once after a ruling that completely changed campaign finance reform and the IRS was given no new funding to handle the new work they had. Feel free to prove that this will always happen. In terms of corruption, seriously? It's odd that he's so corrupt and yet there's no evidence of it nor any charges pending.

So you think that you need to pay taxes so the government can fund your lavish lifestyle ?

The government is too big to even account for it's own actions.

Your personal debt is because YOU live beyond your paycheck.
The government debt is because they spend more money than they take in.

Just another corrupt, mismanaged government agency. What is worse is liberals want more of this. They want government controlling everything.

FEMA had similiar problems. What is unfair about this is the fact that the agency makes the error, but penalize the people they pay out often years after the fact. Under this kind of environment why would anybody want to deal with such agencies? Why should someone else be harshly penalized for your mistake? In fact, I have seen no evidence that these agencies are held accountable.
