Some states turned to midazolam this decade after they could no longer get sodium thiopental, a drug that was regularly used for executions. A U.S. manufacturer stopped producing sodium thiopental in 2009, and countries that still produce it won't allow its export to the United States for use in lethal injections.
The "anti-Capitol punishment" crowd - i.e. Leftist Activists have managed to ban the human drugs that will give a quick death. Their premise is that IF they can cause enough problems in Death Penalty cases, then they will be able to abolish the Death Penalty.
This is a State matter, the unintended consequence is that they are responsible for a needlessly prolonged execution.
Midazolam obviously did not recieve enough testing to reveal its drawbacks. What we need is a really BIG test of this product so its effects can be clearly understood. How about testing it on all those who insisted the change to midazolam be made? That should be a large enough test sample. We'll inject them with the drug and the next day they can tell us how their execution went. We'll take no comment as meaning they had no problems with being executed in this manner.
What always amazes me about death penalty discussions, is that the group of people who claim to be most afraid of too big government encroaching on their lives and freedom are usually gun ho supporters of the same government deciding to kill people.
And of course those same people who claim to be terrified of too much government power are usually ok with these reports that state governments are torturing people to death.
"What always amazes me" is that there are people who think in terms of "government deciding to kill people" (and say it over, and over, and over again) and totally ignore that a Judge and Jury had any part at all in that "deciding to kill people".
It's not the "government deciding to kill people" - it's the "will of the people".
Leftists always think in terms of "the government deciding". Non-Leftists think in terms of the "Citizens deciding".
The prison can rig a self-shoot mechanism that allows the condemned to pull the trigger of a 44 magnum pointed at his temple, if the drugs aren't doing the job, yeah suicide is a sin, but so is murder.
