Would you want your town or city/town to fund a needle exchange program?
Not sure if I would. But I do realize it will help some avoid aids and possibly in the long run keep us from spending more on that person who get aids and or Hepatitis from dirty needles.
Isn't possession of a syringe without a prescription a crime in every state?
Seems like an admission we can't enforce the law and the encouragement of bad behavior.
Laws vary from state to state on possession of syringes. But yes, in some states a person could be arrested for having a syringe and no prescription. Or even having a brand new pack of syringes that are for someone (diabetic family member). Of course they would get off if arrested, but not until they could prove why they had them.
This is once again a failure of the war on drugs to do anything except spend tax payer's money and cause a huge black market that is terribly violent due to the risk/reward ratio that is created.

I'd support funding for helping people kick their drug habits ... but spending my tax dollars to enable them? Never in a million years.

I couldn't agree more, it's time we looked for other solutions.
Several States have had Needle Exchange Programs supported by State funds; not federal funds or pass through funds.
These programs are very heavily monitored, and are only opened after much debate, and approval by Community Boards.
While many disapprove, they have shown themselves to be successful in reducing crime, preventing the spread of infectious disease, and containing drug use.
I find it strange that the GOP opposed needle exchanges and the president never got the chance to fund the programs until the Democrats took over. For myself, I support needle exchange programs to avoid the transmission of HIV.
