One thing that really upsets me is how the natives are viewed as a great, peaceful nature loving people, but that was hardly the case. Natives constantly raided other tribes, killed people, took women etc. heck, when Europeans first arrived many were quite happy to use our advanced tech to take out other tribes.

Like it or not people, if a people doesn't advance bad things will happen regardless of what people/country/nation is involved.

So the reply is a straw man rather than just answering it with a straight answer.

We didn't get the whole story either, back in the 50s. I'm not sure the Viking stuff was well known then. But when my younger daughter was about 10 (would have been 1997), she came home from school one day and told me Columbus was a bad guy and spread disease. I told her I doubt he personally infected anyone.
I grew up in the 1990s. I never got the full story either. Living in Georgia, Columbus Day was never big. For that reason, I never really cared. I don't care if no one gets a day off. I'm "whatever" about. The issue is that there are those who look at dismissing Columbus as "deviant" and "horrible" to put it mildly.
