The Constitution was not a revolutionary document. It was basically a rewrite of state constitutions which were based on the British government system minus the monarchy. The Senate was like the House of Lords, the House of Representatives was like the House of Commons, the Presidency was like the Monarchy with an elected position in place of a hereditary one. The Courts were pretty similar. The Bill of Rights were long in the making, going back to the tradition in Britain of reducing the absolute power of the monarch.

So... the Constitution could easily be written today. It would be based on the existing Constitution(s)...just like the last one.

Everyone turn off the television and the incendiary drivel, and try reading long-form written journalism again. It is an effort to find these days, but you will be better off.

It's a nice idea but will never happen. How can a book compete with watching Fox tell their viewers that Obama wants the country to get Ebola?

This is not a sporting event, in which "fans" of the winning team gloat and goad the losing fans. This is the nation voting.

When policies of the party in power deliver-

1. lower incomes
2. more unemployed citizens
3. more citizens living in poverty
4. more citizens on foodstamps
5. higher energy costs

- what did you expect?

People care about being employed, earning enough to have a good living, and being able to provide for thier families. BS issues, like global warming, gay marriage, and "war on women" are a joke when the average person is experiencing a lower standard of living and has dimmer prospects for thier children.

The nation as always been divided; which the founders recognized ;so they created a federation of states and said in constitution that all powers not specifically given I it to federal government were given to the state. We now see even progressive realizing that and passing laws that actually are in conflict with federal law. The reason;to avoid conflict we se now from federal government being so big and one size fits all thinking. It doesn't clearly.

Of course not.

One side is determined to control the other, and the other determined to NOT be controlled.

There is no compromise possible.

The left has no right to control others for its wishes.

Period.

I completely disagree. That is exactly what it's become. When you have a party that proposes a health care plan they say promotes "personal responsibility", then call it socialism when the other side implements it, it's nothing more than politics. We've each taken a side, we cheer for our side and thrill at the loss of the other side. It's politics as a sport with anger as the result.

You will not see Republicans come up with a health care plan (especially after spending six years denigrating the ACA). They have calculated that it's more advantageous to just rip apart anything Democrats propose. The result, unfortunately, is every election further divides the country to the point, it will always always get worse until the divide somehow becomes permanent.

And vice versa. Each side has a completely different view about the future of the country. I would say it even comes down to certain industries. The right want coal, fracking, oil, energy, tobacco, maybe some manufacturing. The left wants technology, energy efficient cars, less pollution, arts and cinema, etc. It's a very right brain/left brain situation and I just don't see the sides ever coming together after it's reached this point.

Actually I read news stories on the web, never stream or watch tv. I read CNN, Fox, and National Review.

You're seriously out to lunch with the anti-Fox crap, you just sound insane to someone who reads multiple sources. I don't expect you to change, just wanted to point it out.

My apologies. I'm sure you find Fox very reputable. Give Rupert my best.

Here's Canada's view of Fox: Canadians did not want "to mimic the kind of hate-filled propaganda with which Fox News has poisoned US politics".
