The FDA is considering lifting the ban on gay men donating blood it has had in place for over 30 years. The ban was enacted to stop the spread of AIDs through donor blood. Proponents argue that the ban discriminates and demeans gay men. I think removing it is a risky proposal.
What exactly is risky about it if the person in question is determined to not have a disease? Besides, we're past the point where AIDS is a gay person disease.
Gays have been donating blood all along, for the simple fact that government and the FDA simply cannot ask or know if a blood donor is gay. A gay person could easily lie and say that they're straight. Therefore, yes, the ban should be lifted. It's stupid.

Actually we tried to give blood a couple of times in the last 15 years. Each time the Red Cross person, asked about our sexual proclivities. We were denied.
If it is certified HIV free, then I don't care.
If "black man's" blood is certified sickle cell free, then I don't care.
If ANY blood of the correct type is certified disease free, then I don't care.

Chances are 900% higher a homosexual has HIV than any woman.
Only an idiot would opt to take homosexual blood just to be politically correct. If I need blood I'll pass.
You wouldn't even know if the blood you are receiving is "homosexual blood." We can detect the HIV virus in people's blood. If it's all clear, it shouldn't matter what the person's sexual preference is.

You'll pass? Pass away is more like it if you expect to ask what the sexuality of your donor is.
