So what do we do? We hit them with sanctions.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/03/us/in-response-to-sony-attack-us-levies-sanctions-on-10-north-koreans.html?action=click&contentCollection=Europe ®ion=Footer&module=TopNews&pgtype=article

What does this accomplish?

The actions may well turn out to be more symbolic than substantive: North Korea already faces some of the heaviest sanctions of any country. The action seemed to be an effort to echo sanctions that the Bush administration imposed eight years ago against a bank that the North Korean leadership used to buy goods illicitly and to reward leaders for loyalty.

In reality, none of the targets of the sanctions are likely to feel much sting.

So what do you suggest? Anyone can criticize, but few can lead with better ideas.

What do you think we should have done?

Yes NK is already heavily sanctioned but what should be our response.

Default The United States is defenseless against North Korean hackers

I challenge this premise.

The entire hacker thing was a ruse to impose sanctions in an attempt at regime change. The problem is, the next regime will probably be worse than the one there now.

The current one is simply inept. That isn't a bad thing.

The cyber warfare defense certainly will turn out to the be same defense that applies to nuclear weapons: mutually assured destruction. That is problematic with countries like NK that often don't act rationally. In the meantime, we are simply going to have to get more wary and intelligent about security. It will be expensive and will add to the hassles of online life.

It hasn't been proven N Korea is behind the hack attacks.

Obama just got done saying sanctions were ineffective when he lifted Cuba's, so why all of the sudden will they work on N Korea? (or Russia for that matter)
One answer is the US. Fedguv is highly dysfunctional and incompetent and will likely use the Sony incident to intrude further into our lives under the guise of "security". Fear mongering, Patriot act anyone?
The internet security of Sony is Sonys problem, just as it is for you and I.

^^^ quite possibly...'never let a crisis (or seeming crisis) go to waste'.

The President said that the US would have a "measured response" at times of its own choosing. Which means, I would guess, that they will do what they want, when they want, for whatever reason (disclosed or otherwise), especially if they can kill the proverbial two birds with one stone -- or better yet, create another "crisis" before the dust settles from this one. That way, it's harder for people to see what they're doing.

The response reported here is said to be "very severe".
